To the Editor: McHutchison et al. (Aug. 6 issue)1 report a similar rate of sustained virologic response among patients who received low-dose peginterferon alfa-2b plus ribavirin and patients who received other regimens. Although the groups of patients who received ribavirin plus either peginterferon alfa-2a or standard-dose peginterferon alfa-2b had a more favorable decrease in on-treatment viral loads than the group that received low-dose peginterferon alfa-2b plus ribavirin, the higher relapse rates among the former groups undermined the beneficial viral kinetic response between week 4 and week 48 of therapy.
